Moving your Shopify or Etsy shop to your own website

What it takes to move a Shopify store, or bring your Etsy listings, to a shop on your own website: one file, your old links kept, and a preview before you pay.

A small shop window sends a parcel along a dotted path to a larger website with a green header, product tiles and a price tag

If you sell online, you probably started where everyone starts: an Etsy shop, or a Shopify store you set up one weekend. It works. But somewhere along the way you noticed that you still do every job yourself: the photos, the product pages, the settings, the newsletter you keep meaning to send.

Moving sounds like a big project, so most owners put it off. It does not have to be one. Here is what moving your shop to your own PageTend website involves, what you do (about ten minutes), what we do, and when staying put is the better call.

Move from Shopify, or add to Etsy?

The two are different, so we treat them differently.

  • Shopify: you are paying for a store builder and running the store yourself. A move replaces it with a shop on your own website that we build and keep running. Your Shopify store keeps working until the day you close it.
  • Etsy: most sellers keep Etsy for the shoppers it brings, and add a shop of their own for the people who already know them: regulars, market visitors, Instagram followers. Bringing your listings over copies them. It does not change or close anything on Etsy.

What you do: send us one file

That is the whole job on your side.

  • From Shopify: open Products, tap Export and choose all products. Shopify emails you a file. Forward it to us with your store's address.
  • From Etsy: open Shop Manager, then Settings, Options, Download Data, and download your Listings file. Email it to us with your shop's name.

Nothing needs to be typed in again by hand.

What we do with it

We import the file and build your shop on a real website, in your colors, with your home page, story and contact page around it.

  • Products and descriptions come over as plain, readable text. They arrive hidden, so nothing shows until you have checked it.
  • Photos, up to six per product, are copied to your site and sized for every screen.
  • Sizes and colors come over as choices. From Shopify they keep their prices: if Large costs $4 more, it still does. Etsy's file does not include a separate price for each choice, so we add those with you.
  • Categories: your Shopify product types become shop categories, shown as chips at the top of the shop.
  • Stock comes over as one count per product, and each order counts it down.

We also set up your shipping (a flat rate, free over an amount, or local pickup), your sales tax rate and your policies. The details for each are on our pages for moving from Shopify and bringing your Etsy shop.

Your old links keep working

This is the part owners worry about most, and with good reason. A Shopify product lives at an address like yourshop.com/products/wool-scarf. People have bookmarked it, pinned it and shared it, and Google has it in its results.

When we switch your domain to the new site, every old product address points to its new page with a permanent redirect. Collection pages that match a shop category, your all-products page and your cart are pointed to the right place too. As with any move, your search positions can shift for a few weeks while Google catches up, but the redirects are what protect them.

Your domain stays in your name. If you bought it through Shopify, we help you move it when you are ready to switch. Etsy listings live on Etsy's own address, so they stay where they are.

How you get paid

You choose, shop by shop:

  • Card at checkout. Shoppers pay by card on your site, on a phone or a computer. The money goes straight into your own payment account, which you connect once and we guide you through. PageTend adds no fee and takes no cut of a sale. The card processor's usual fee still applies, charged by them, not us.
  • Order requests. The shopper sends an order and you reply with a payment request, if you prefer to bill people yourself.

You can also make your own discount codes from your phone: a percentage off, dollars off or free shipping, with a minimum order, an end date or a limit on uses if you want one.

Before you decide, add up what your current store costs in a typical month: the plan, any apps and the per-sale fees. Then compare it with one flat monthly price and the card processor's fee.

What we do after the move

A store builder gives you the tools. You still have the job. With PageTend, the website and the shop are run for you:

  • Changes by email. Send a note or a text when something changes. Small changes are done within one business day, and there is no limit on them.
  • A managed blog, if you want one. Tell us about a new collection or a question customers keep asking, and we write the post. You read it on your own site and approve it with one button. Four posts a month, $49 a month.
  • A mailing list, if you want one. We add a sign-up form to your site, then write and send four emails a month for your new drops and sales, after you approve each one. They go out from your own domain, so they look like they came from you. $49 a month.
  • Nothing to update. There are no apps or plugins for you to keep current.

You pack the parcels. We keep the site and the shop running.

When staying on Shopify is the better call

Our shop is made for small makers and local stores: up to a few hundred products, sizes and colors with simple prices, one sales tax rate and flat-rate or free shipping. It does not do everything a large store needs. If your store relies on add-on apps, subscriptions, selling in several currencies, sales tax worked out by state, or separate stock counts for every size and color, staying on Shopify may suit you better, and we will tell you so before you pay anything.

Some things do not come over in any move: past orders, customer accounts, reviews and gift cards. Kind words from customers you can share can go on your new site.

What it costs

  • Website: $99 a month, month to month. The shop is free with it.
  • Moving your shop: included for up to 100 products. For a bigger shop we quote the move first, and nothing is charged until you say yes.
  • Blog and mailing list: optional, $49 a month each.

You do not have to decide from a description. We build your shop on a real site first and email you the link, before you pay anything. Nothing goes live until you approve it. See everything the shop does on our online shop page, or send us your store's address and we will build it.
