Client story · Charity · Hangzhou, China

A global site for a charity that runs on volunteers.

CTSS has written monthly letters to left-behind children in rural China since 2014. It wanted a site in English for readers outside China, and one that does not depend on any one volunteer to keep it going.

The story

Where they started, what we built, how it runs now.

  1. Where they started

A site for readers in China, and none for the rest of the world. A volunteer designed one for overseas readers but could not finish it. Another launched it, but could not always keep it current, and both have since moved on.

  2. What we built

A warm site in English and Chinese: how a letter travels from a school mailbox to a volunteer's desk, the children's drawings, the founder's letter, the transparency documents to read on the page, and a sign-up form for new volunteers.

  3. How it runs now

When the team wants a page changed or a new detail added, they send us an email. Nobody has to learn a website tool, so the site no longer rests on one volunteer's spare time.

What we built

English and 中文, one tap apart.

Overseas readers arrive in English, and the switch in the top bar takes anyone to the Chinese pages, such as the six steps a letter takes from a school mailbox to a volunteer's desk.

On a phone

The same site, in your pocket.

Volunteers write their replies from anywhere with a computer or a phone, so the site is made to read well on both.

  • We were lucky to find PageTend. With no funds, staff, time or technical skills, we never expected to get a team that could design and manage our whole website. Changing content is easy too: just one email. It's truly wonderful!
